We’ve removed the level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road in Diggers Rest by building 2 new road bridges, making the Sunbury Line level crossing free.
Removing these crossings improves safety and traffic flow in the area and prepares the area for future development.
Vehicles can now travel over the new Golden Way road bridge, which connects the Old Calder Highway to Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road.
Approximately 8000 vehicles used the Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road level crossings each day, facing delays of up to 36 minutes when up to 27 trains travelled through in the morning peak.
These projects build upon the Sunbury Line Upgrade which, in conjunction with the Metro Tunnel, will allow more trains to run more often. Removing these crossings means more benefits for local communities and a better transport network for all Victorians.
