Clyde Road Berwick

We removed the level crossing at Clyde Road, Berwick in February 2022 by building a road underpass beneath the rail line.

The level crossing was the 12th to be removed along the Pakenham Line, with 10 more to go to make it boom-gate free by 2025, paving the way for more services more often for commuters in Melbourne’s south east.

The project will also deliver an upgraded bus interchange at Berwick Station and new walking and bike riding connections.

Site investigations and engineering assessments found that a road underpass was the best solution for removing the level crossing, with other designs taking up to a year longer to build.

Around 22,000 vehicles travel through the Clyde Road, Berwick level crossing each day, with the boom gates down for up to a third of the morning peak.

Removing this level crossing will improve safety and traffic flow, while creating better local connections to the nearby residential, health and education precincts.
