Ballarat Station Upgrade

We’re upgrading Ballarat Station to improve accessibility, safety, and connectivity for all public transport users, while considering the heritage of the station.

We’re building an accessible pedestrian overpass, with a passenger lift and stairs on each platform. We have improved access to the existing northern station entrance with a new ramp, stairs, and automatic swing door.

These improvements will make it easier and safer for all commuters to cross between the platforms and use the northern station entrance, closest to other destinations such as the bus interchange and multideck parking, in the station precinct.

People with disability, and those carrying luggage or pushing a pram will no longer need to leave the station to cross the rail line via Lydiard Street.

The designs, endorsed by Heritage Victoria, provide contemporary companion structures to the enduring heritage-listed buildings, demonstrating accessibility and heritage considerations working together.

The new, accessible northern entrance has opened, following the installation of a ramp, stairs, handrails and an automatic door.

The new pedestrian overpass and lift shafts have been craned into place.

Crews are installing lighting, tiling, handrails and tactiles on the two staircases and finishing the internal fit-out and electrical works on the overpass. Glaziers are installing the glass in the lifts, lift shafts and the ‘belvedere’ balconies– elevated viewing areas with glass walls in both lift landings.

The overpass, stairs and lifts will open in April 2026.
