The level crossing at Chelsea Road, Chelsea was removed in November 2021 by lowering the rail line into a trench, with Chelsea Road closed to vehicles.
We built a new road connection across the rail trench at Argyle Avenue and Thames Promenade was extended to the Nepean Highway. The Swanpool Avenue level crossing was also closed to vehicles.
The new road connection between Thames Promenade and the Nepean Highway creates a direct connection to major arterial roads, including the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and new Mordialloc Freeway.
A new Chelsea Station, with improved pedestrian and bus connections, was built as part of the project.
The boom gates at the 3 Chelsea level crossings were down for up to 40% of the morning peak, when up to 30 trains ran through the crossings.
Works started in 2020, with all level crossings from Edithvale to Bonbeach gone in late 2021.
